The Kentucky School of Craft

The Kentucky School of Craft is a new professional crafts school affiliated with Hazard Community College and is part of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). The school is located in Hindman, Ky., a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. Hindman is known for its history of education and support of the crafts. The Kentucky School of Craft aspires to become a national and international model for craft education as part of community development, exemplary in its programs and outcomes. Its mission is "to train people to start and expand craft and craft-related businesses that create high-quality works based on the regional traditions of design and workmanship." Students at The Kentucky School of Craft will be able to obtain a variety of certificates and degrees through Hazard Community College. Courses of study in five media areas include jewelry/metals, wood, clay, blacksmithing and fibers.

The Kentucky Appalachian Artisan Center is an artisan support and marketing center with the goal of "preserving our heritage by serving our artisans." They assist writers, storytellers, musicians, craftsmen and others carrying on traditional art forms.

The Artisan Center opened July 2003 and is expected to host 400,000 tourists each year. The $8 million center contains 20,000 square feet. The facility's offerings include crafts, music, art, books, and specialty foods for purchase, as well as on-site dining. In addition to the arts sales and showcase function, it provides arts education programs and serves as a tourism information center and Interstate rest stop.

The Kentucky Artisan Heritage Trails showcase interesting places, exciting events, wonderful food and some of the state's finest artisans. The Trails are designed to provide an experience rich in local culture and scenic beauty. The University of Kentucky Department of Agriculture's Cooperative Extension Service's Family and Consumer Science Agents can provide information on Home-Based and Micro-Businesses, designed to address business challenges from decisions on a business idea to managing the ongoing business. Program content can be general business information or addressed to specific businesses, ie. bed & breakfast, craft, or food-related businesses.
