NON-JURIED CRAFTSPEOPLE

Q). I want to sell my crafts. How can your program help me?

A). The Kentucky Craft Marketing Program (CMP) is a division of the Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency in the Commerce Cabinet. The CMP is designed for Kentucky craftspeople that want to develop their business on a wholesale level to retail shops and galleries in Kentucky, the U.S. and abroad. The majority of activities coordinated by the Program are geared to wholesale contacts. All craftspeople that contact the Craft Marketing Program are included on the Registry, which also serves as the Program mailing list. The Registry is provided upon request, for a fee, to buyers, show and fair organizers, special interest groups, suppliers, etc.

Registering with the Craft Marketing Program can provide valuable contact with the craft community and aid in the development of a craft network. Non-juried craftspeople may contact Program staff about:

  • Individual technical assistance
  • In-state craft organizations
  • Workshops and educational opportunities
  • Retail and wholesale show contacts
  • Financing sources
      return to questions

Q). Why would I want to wholesale?

A). Wholesaling generates profit through volume of business. Gift shops double the wholesale price of goods, which is called "keystoning." While crafts are difficult to truly "mass produce," they have become a part of the mainstream giftware industry. Wholesaling does demand that you be market ready, i.e., having the product and production capabilities to do quantities, a wholesale pricing structure, price lists, brochures and other information, and attend wholesale shows. One of the advantages wholesaling affords for many professional craftspeople is the flexibility it offers for spending more time in the studio and less time attending retail fairs. Shops tend to re-order, keeping a steady flow of business for the craft producer. Retail business, however, requires that more time be spent preparing for and traveling to shows and fairs to continually turn over sales.   return to questions

Q). What do I have to do to get into the "Kentucky Crafted" Program?

A). Your work must be reviewed through CMP’s jury process. Persons interested in being participants of the Program must be Kentucky residents. Interested persons submit their work to a panel of craft professionals who evaluate the work on technique, originality, and design. The jury session is held once a year, usually in June.  return to questions

Q). What does "juried" mean?

A). The Jury process establishes quality standards for the CMP. Only the work of the highest standard is accepted into the CMP. Once your work is accepted for participation via this process, you may use the Kentucky Crafted logo and participate in CMP marketing and promotional activities.  return to questions

Q). How does the jury process work?

A). After returning the enrollment form, you will be placed on the registry and receive notice of the jury session dates in the spring. Jury applicants are asked to submit five samples of their work, along with the jury application. There is a $20.00 non-returnable fee to jury.

The jury panel is composed of three out-of-state craft professionals, including a professional craftsperson, craft administrator, and gallery/shop owner, one Kentucky retailer/gallery owner, and two Kentucky jurors with outstanding knowledge of Kentucky crafts: Tim Glotzbach, Kentucky School of Craft, Hindman (director), and Victoria Faoro, Kentucky Artisans Center at Berea (director/buyer). A seventh juror is a participant of the CMP.

The jury process is anonymous, and individuals are not identified with their work. Jurors review each five samples, and complete scoring sheets. They are also encouraged to write comments designed to be helpful in improving or marketing your work. These comments are then mailed to applicants.. Staff is available prior to and after the session for further clarification of instructions or results. return to questions

Q). What if I don’t want to wholesale?

A). You can still be a part of the CMP but should realize that the focus of the CMP is for wholesale craft businesses. Being a juried participant can only enhance your marketing opportunities, and the use of the logo can be an effective retail marketing tool, as well.  return to questions

Q). I’m already in business. How can CMP assist me?

A). If you are a non-juried participant, you are eligible to participate in any of the educational activities offered, including educational workshops and presentations. You can also utilize CMP staff for resources or individual consultations. Your name will also be placed on the registry that is used to fill requests for arts events.  return to questions

Q). I do one of a kind craft work. Is the Program for me?

A). While the Program is designed for those who are interested in producing their work in limited quantities, a one-of-a-kind artist can benefit from use of the logo, contacts and information provided by staff.  return to questions

Q). Can the CMP help me market paintings, sculpture, or other two dimensional work?

A). Through a project with the Kentucky Arts Council (KAC), visual artists may participate in Kentucky Crafted:The Market. A jury for visual artists is conducted by the KAC. Information on the Visual Arts at the Market program is available on the Arts Council's website at www.artscouncil.ky.govreturn to questions

Q). I don’t live in Kentucky. Are there other programs like yours available in other states?

A). Each of the 50 states and six jurisdictional governments has created an arts agency to support excellence in and access to the arts. You may find assistance by contacting the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies website, where you will find contact information for any state, jurisdiction or region.

An article in the May 2002 edition of the Crafts Report lists 21 states with comprehensive (statewide) cooperative initiatives that help to promote or support craft.  return to questions

Q). Is there a cost to be involved in the CMP?

A). The CMP is funded by state tax dollars. Fees for activities are only to offset the cost to the CMP. There is no membership fee. Staff consultations are available at no charge.  return to questions

Q). How can I get my works in the state parks?

A). For information, contact:
