December 2002 - First Online Issue

New Market !

New Slogan !

New Year !

"WE GOT IT MADE IN KENTUCKY!"

The Kentucky Craft Marketing (KCMP) staff is busy preparing for the 22nd annual Kentucky handcrafted gift market, Kentucky Crafted: The Market, 2003, scheduled for February 27 and 28, for trade days, and March 1 & 2, for the public days. For the eighth year, The Market has been selected as one of the top twenty events in the southeast.

Top 20 Events Logo

Kentucky still holds the distinction of being one of the few states in the country to sponsor a wholesale/retail show for its craft businesses.

This year's Market slogan, "We Got It Made In Kentucky", was created to reflect how fortunate Kentuckians are to have an active and supportive state art and craft industry program. Retail and wholesale buyers can also say, "We got it made in Kentucky". The slogan reflects the KCMP's new focus on product development. Product development grants are available to in-state craft and visual art exhibitors to assist buyers in developing products that they would like to have on their retail shelves!

Over 300 exhibitors are participating in the 2003 Market. Joining The Market for the first time will be 62 new exhibitors in the following categories: KCMP juried participants (39), food section (5), out-of-state guests (6), publishers (3), visual artists (6), Kentucky Wood Products Competitiveness Corporation exhibitors (3), and Kentucky organizations (7). The new Gallery Section, featuring 42 exhibitors, offers an exhibit area to juried participants and visual artists with unique, one-of-a-kind or limited-production items. The gallery has drawn artists that normally would not participate in The Market. In addition to KCMP's already extensive buyers' marketing campaign, special marketing promotions are being mailed to buyer lists targeted for gallery owners, interior designers, museum gift shops, gift cards, and architects, to name a few.

The New Product Showcase (NPS), located at the front entrance to the exhibit hall, will feature garden-related and outdoor products from exhibitors. The NPS is being utilized as an activity of the Product Development Program to encourage development of new products that fit the trends and buying habits of the national gift marketplace. This theme relates to the current interest for these types of products and gives a pleasing and welcoming entrance to the show. As a special activity, Product Development Awards of $500 will be given to three in-state craft or visual art exhibitors to work with the Kentucky Department of Parks in developing possible new products for their gift shops.

Kentucky Collection Logo

Located in the New Product Showcase, The Kentucky Collection is a selection of Kentucky crafts, visual art, food, music, books and videos that is being test marketed in twelve retail outlets in the state. Now in its second year as a pilot project of the KCMP, the Collection is currently being evaluated to determine the next steps for its continuance. Staff will be available to talk with both vendors and retailers about future participation opportunities. Ninety-five vendors are currently part of the Kentucky Collection and were selected through an application process as participants of the KCMP, Department of Agriculture, Kentucky Arts Council, and book publishers who exhibit at The Market.

Special events at The Market include a buyers breakfast and workshop sponsored by The Kentucky Retail Federation, a statewide advocacy group that represents the retail community in Kentucky. The breakfast and workshop will feature Lynn Allinger, a nationally-renowned craft retailer as guest speaker. Lynn, co-owner of Craft Company No. 6 in Rochester, New York, a contemporary American gallery that specializes in handmade jewelry, gifts, accessories and art objects, will also act as the official booth judge for the booth awards. Lynn will also evaluate booths and offer tips on how to improve booth designs. The awards will be given during the annual Awards Dinner, sponsored in part by National Processing Company (NPC). Ms. Allinger also serves on the board of the American Craft Council and the Craft Retailers' Association for Tomorrow.

The KCMP and Department of Agriculture partner with the Kentucky Retail Federation in presenting Retailer Awards to an outstanding in-state retailer, a Kentucky Proud food retailer, a Kentucky state park gift shop manager, and an out-of-state retailer.

A silent auction of items donated by exhibitors will be held, and the proceeds will help fund new exhibitor scholarships for next year's Market. This is one way in which the Craft Marketing Program can help develop new craft businesses and provide an influx of new products into the show for the wholesale buyers.

The Kentucky Arts Council (KAC) will again promote the work of artists who have received Kentucky Arts Council Fellowships or who have been accepted into programs, such as the Performing Arts on Tour Directory. The booth will sell (wholesale & retail) the books of Kentucky writers, CDs and cassettes of Kentucky recording artists, and the works of Kentucky film and video makers.

Ongoing demonstrations by CMP juried participants will be sponsored by exhibiting Kentucky craft organizations and KCMP Market exhibitors.

The Kentucky Historical Society, The Kentucky Art and Craft Foundation, and The Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will sponsor the children's hands-on educational activities.

To truly grasp the grandeur of all the events and participants in this "Cultural Showcase of Kentucky's Finest," see the official Market program to be published by Arts Across Kentucky magazine (spring 2003 edition) and available on line at www.kyartsandcrafts.com.

The 2003 Market will include 25 visual artists!

The 2003 Market will include 25 visual artists working in watercolor, photography, batik, pen and ink, paintings on silk, mixed media, and printmaking. The following artists will have booths and art work for sale at The Market: Pat Banks, Patricia Brock, Sandra Charles, Jan Fleck, CJ Fletcher, Elsie Harris, Tracy Hawkins, Emmy Houweling, Kim Huber, Shirley Jeter, Jane Ward Kehrt, Rita Kent, Janice LeBrun, Twyla Martins, Marianna McDonald, Carl McKinley, Barbara Medford, Wadia Newman, Carol Shutt, Dinah Smiley, John Snell, John Stines, Eugene Thomas, Paula Wojasinski, and Denise Yates.

New Gallery Section For Market 2003

This new category is being offered so that artists that normally would not participate in the Market might do so, and specialty buyers that are looking for product suited for museums, galleries, collectors, and commissions will be attracted to attend this year.

In addition to the existing extensive buyers marketing campaign, special marketing promotions are being mailed to buyer lists targeted for gallery owners, interior designers, museum gift shops, gift cards, and architects, to name a few. These specialty buyers will have the opportunity to visit not only the new gallery section, but also all the variety of products that the Market has to offer. This enterprising effort to bring niche product and buyer together is yet another example of the CMP's mission for building sales opportunities for Kentucky artisans.

The new gallery exhibitors include: Pat Banks, Bonnie A. Blincoe, Raymond Bridewell, Elizabeth Ann Brown, Janet Bailey Burch,Catherine Loehle Burkhead, P.J. Silent Auction Items Needed

The Silent Auction will once again be a featured event on February 28th, Friday evening of The Market. Last year, contributions set a record high and raised the total receipts from the silent auction to over $3,000. This fund goes to support scholarships to allow a number of new exhibitors to participate in next year's market. This is one way in which the Craft Marketing Program can help new craft businesses develop and provide an influx of new products into the show for wholesale buyers. Bidding for this year's auction will be open Thursday evening and all day Friday until 7:00 p.m. Juried participants wanting to donate to the auction this year should contact Vallorie Henderson, Special Projects Coordinator, at 888-592-7238, ext. 4811.

Long Range Planning Survey

Please participate in the Long Range Planning survey to help define the issues and concerns that need to be addressed by the Arts Council, Kentucky Craft Marketing Program, and other organizations to shape the future of the arts in Kentucky. "We urge all Kentuckians to fill out this survey, no matter how they may be affiliated with the arts or what their level of interest is," says Arts Council spokesman Ed Lawrence. "It only takes a few minutes and in the long run it will help inform the Arts Council in identifying the issues and concerns that need to be addressed in creating a vision for the arts in Kentucky." As the information from the surveys, public forums, and interest group meetings is compiled, it will shape a Long Range Plan for the arts in Kentucky for 2004-2008. The Arts Council plans to release the plan to the public in July of 2003.

Take the opportunity now to say, "I helped create a vision for the arts in Kentucky!" Sign on at www.kyarts.org or to request a paper version be mailed to you at toll free number 888/833-2787. Please act now, the survey closes January 30, 2003.
